Nerd Alert!

February 26, 2010 Leave a comment

I gotta be honest and admit that this little writing experiment is one of many ways I’m attempting to get over some professional KO’s I’ve fielded the last 12 months or so.  You know, throw yourself into as many projects as possible, both to keep you busy, and in the hopes that something might ‘stick’… blah, blah, blah, everyone has a sob story, I know.

So! This little blog here is one of my pet projects these days, and in the spirit of the nerdy bookworm I once was, I’m going to get out my spectacles and head to culinary-wanna-be class! First up:

Just Like Liver

February 9, 2010 4 comments

I love terrines! and pâté! and foie gras! and any number of iterations of internal organs. But I HATE hate HATE fried liver and onions.

I sorta feel the same way about this band:

ARTIST: Marina & The Diamonds
TRACK: ‘Hollywood’
SIDE DISH: The Polish line at the start initially made me want to fight my hunger off with a sword of kielbasa, but the constant feelings of love-hate-love-hate in regards to this track are too reminiscent of my feelings for offal in general (I’m picky – but adventurous! – when it comes to eating insides. Actually, brains are really the only thing I can think of that I absolutely dislike, full-stop). Mariana’s voice is intriguing, but her range… seems stilted. In fact, the whole thing sort of reeks of trying too hard: kind of like what a label would imagine if you asked them to create a Shakira/Regina Spektor clone. But hey, I’m feeling magnanimous today, so let’s give these kids the benefit of the doubt! Much like charcuterie, I’m gonna let this one age a bit before passing judgment.

Make Me: Creamy Shrimp-Stuffed Biscuits

February 8, 2010 Leave a comment

Hmm.Well, the idea was to have a recipe created and posted every Sunday, but the Superbowl put a major crimp in my posting schedule this week: Blogging while drunk = fun! But maybe for another time.

But speaking of N’awlins… this meal started out West Coast but quickly acquired a Southern drawl thanks to all the Sports Center coverage echoing around the house all week. I knew I wanted to skew towards seafood after My First Earthquake made my mouth water with some spicy cioppino tunes; add a little countrified rock here and there from TAB the band (plus a little inspiration from the Food Network), and you’ve got my Creamy Shrimp-Stuffed Biscuits.

Make it Work

February 6, 2010 Leave a comment

Ok… so today is the day I’m to cook my dish inspired by this past week’s posts. I’ve actually got it all worked out (minus a quick trip to the bodega), but for one obstacle… DISHES.

“We cant do anything for ourselves // Survivals slim. Dishes in the sink // Water flowing over, kitchins goin’ under”

ARTIST: Akudama, via Brooklyn
TRACK: ‘Dishes’
SIDE DISH: I love these guys – caught them (two?) years ago at The Knititng Factory, back when it used to be walking distance from my digs in Manhattan. Dreamy adolescence – like a silky cream sauce with just a bit of cheesy entitlement (hint hint).

Marie Antoinette was a Meringue in Wolf’s Clothing

Oooh, someone actually read my blog. In fact, I have a strong suspicion there was more than one of you (mostly because I can do simple math)! And wouldn’t you know, My First Earthquake (that cute little poppet and her band from my inaugural post) sent me a link to their video for ‘Sweet Frown,’ which features some cheeky nods to Versailles’s most infamous Mdme.

Aaannnnd… now I want cake.

TAB’s Got Sass

I was meant to have gone to the Fearless Music TV party last night at Crash Mansion, but was waylaid by a good meal. I’m always distracted from one by the other, you know what I mean?

Unfortunately, although I mowed like a madwoman, I missed out on some yummy tunes from TAB the Band. Pure rock ‘n roll goodness: a little retro, a whole lot of fun, and as serious as a red dye #9 scare.

Which of course leads to the following synaptic clicking and crawling in my brain, nearly every time I catch myself smelling their infectious guitar grind : TAB the Band = 70s Rock gone 21st Century Modern = TaB the Soda. And then suddenly it’s Summer 1978, I’m my mother, and my pantlegs flare wider than my waist.

Damn. Sometimes I think I was born 20 years too late.
